Faith & Film 2026
Ruth & Boaz (2025) 1hr 35min
This is an appealing film to watch. There is sweetness
and innocence, moments of fearsome danger
and some beautiful music.
It is based on the biblical narrative – in a modern setting
– indirectly and delightfully retelling the original,
highly significant, Old Testament story.
Choral (2025) 1hr 53min. As World War 1 rages on, Dr Henry Guthrie (after a musical career in Germany) takes over a British choral society that has lost many of its men to the army. The people of the Yorkshire town manage to discover that the best response to the chaos of war is to make beautiful music together. Starring Ralph Fiennes.
Mary Magdalene (2018) 2hr
This well-acted, biblical drama follows Mary Magdalene, disciple of Jesus. The film aims to clear Mary’s name and debunk the mistaken but persistent theory, first promoted by Pope Gregory, in 591, that she was a prostitute … this, despite the Vatican having (in 2016) declared Mary of Magdala to have been ‘an apostle of the apostles’ – their equal – and ‘the first messenger of The Resurrection’.
The movie is visually powerful and has a particularly, good musical score.
Bonhoeffer – Agent of Grace, (2024) 2hr 12min
As the world teeters on the brink of annihilation, Dietrich Bonhoeffer is swept into the epicentre of a plot to assassinate Hitler. With his faith and fate at stake, Bonhoeffer must choose between upholding his moral convictions or risking it all to save millions of Jews from genocide. Will his shift from preaching peace to accessory to plotting murder alter the course of history or lead to martyrdom? We learn much about Bonhoeffer … and why his writings and biographical legacy continue to have relevance for our times.
The Chosen (2020) – S2 E8 Beyond Mountains 57mins
Jesus, having chosen most of His disciples, is busy with Matthew, preparing for the Sermon on the Mount. How and why The Beatitudes are chosen as the Sermon’s opening segment are featured, as are the practical duties done by the disciples in organising for the event. There are scenes involving Pharisees and Roman officers too. We also see the pivotal roles, enacted by women in the Jesus-led community.
