Written by Revd Anne Shave, this guide is an invitation to prayer.
You are invited to walk around the Church using various features of the church as prompts to reflect on some short readings, and to pray.
It begins by sitting in a pew at the back and looking at the church as a whole as it lies before you, taking time to appreciate its beauty. Then you move on to the baptismal font, the commemorative windows, memorials, and Tukutuku panels. And then the stained glass windows, followed by a reading and prayer and information about the pulpit and eagle lectern. Of course we cannot forget the wonderful organ and the Sanctuary. You will find some hidden gems as you journey through the devotional guide.
Two interesting things that I discovered were that the three brass knobs under the First and Second World War panels are in fact brass buttons from military uniforms. I also discovered, hidden at the back of the Sanctuary a small stained glass window made from fragments of glass including some from Westminster Abbey damaged by air bombardment in 1940.
I highly recommend spending some time walking through the church and working your way through the devotional guide, discovering, praying and reflecting. It is a very beautiful and peaceful church to wander around.
And a big thanks to Revd Anne Shave who wrote the guide for us.
Copies of the guide can be found at the back of the church, and also in the prayer chapel. You can also download a copy from this article.
