Give Gear Get Great is a community driven project designed to help children participate in sport.

The project was initially developed with the Spreydon/Heathcote Community Board in 2015 as a one-off sports equipment donation, but has grown and is now being driven out across more of the city.

The initiative involves collecting donations of outgrown, used or unused sports equipment and sports shoes from the community which is then recycled back out to the community at local events or through a collection system.

The initiative aims to reduce the barriers to participation for children to take part in sport and be active. It reduces the costs of playing sport by giving children access to used sports equipment.

To collect the items, wheelie bins with the ‘Give Gear Get Great’ branding, are positioned at sites of partnering community organisations, schools, churches, or libraries for the local community to deposit unwanted or used items. The bins are emptied on a regular basis and the donated equipment inventoried, stored and then given out at community events, or to schools where requests have been made.

Look out for these bins at a location near you!

The latest collection point is Fendalton Library, cnr Jeffreys/Clyde Rd.
