Lifestreams @ Medbury: News and Roster

Dear Lifestreamers,

Next week is the first week of the month. That means it's an All-age/alternative worship at Lifestreams.

OK I know what it's like to be a parent; you're thinking, "Oh no, not All-age. I'm not bringing our children to church if there's no crèche or kidzone!"

Well just relax, have a cup of tea or something stronger and leave it with me. Vicki, Angela and I will dream up some fantastic ways to engage the children in prayer activities that will inspire both them and you. So come along to our all-age/alternative worship as Lifestreams. It will be fun.

A FEW WORDS

"By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
- Jesus in the Gospel of John
Let's be honest. This love business that Jesus talked about is easier said than done. I mean it could be messy, inconvenient and costly. After all it cost Jesus his life and the fact that God raised him from the dead doesn't make the prospect any easier for us. What is it that makes this Jesus kind of love for one another possible? As Anna and I prepare to welcome a new baby into our home I find myself reflecting on the kind of love needed to do the task of late night feeding, burping, changing and early morning nappy washing. Such love is certainly more than a feeling; it has to be at 3am in the morning! It's the kind of love that requires an overarching attitude to life, and in particular to the one who is the object of our love.

Jesus said, "Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another." So what is the way in which Jesus loved his disciples, and in what way does he love us? It may require a certain change in thinking for us to realise that Jesus was talking about a different kind of love than most of us are used to thinking of.

Try reading the passage below within the entire thirteenth chapter of John's Gospel while reflecting with the following questions:

What unique understanding of reality is the Jesus kind of love based up?
What might the Jesus kind of love look like if it was allowed to shape our values and the way we tend to each other?

We'll explore this more on Sunday, so see you at Lifestreams.

LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS MOVIE AND FEEDBACK

Thanks to the work of Chris we now have a short film of Light in the Darkness to share with those of you who were away during Easter holidays. We'll show it after Lifestreams on Sunday.
For those of you who did make it along on Good Friday and Easter we have feedback forms to help us evaluate and develop similar kinds of events for the future. I've linked to the forms below; one for those who assisted in any way, and one for those who contributed by attending. Can you help us by responding/reviewing? Thank you so much.

WORKSHOPS AND SPEAKERS

I thought some of you may like me to highlight events of interest that relate to Christian life and growth. Here's two events that look interesting. I didn't right the descriptions below by the way - though the bit about creating irregular, socially creative communities sounds like something I could get into.

Hear Professor John Barclay (Durham) speaking about:'Paul and the Subversive Power of the Unconditional Gift'

Working from the practice of gifts in Paul's first-century context, a critical question emerges concerning who is qualified or worthy to receive the gift. Paul's mission to non-Jews broke Jewish ethnic and legal norms. It was the social corollary of his conviction that a divine gift (of Christ) had been given and distributed without qualifying conditions. This conviction represents a highly unsettling perception of the world, at odds with the normal categories of hierarchy, quality and significance. It was capable of creating irregular, socially creative communities. Thus Paul emerges as one of the most subversive thinkers of the ancient world.

John 13:31-35

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33 Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, "Where I am going, you cannot come.' 34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
