Welcome to the Anglican Parish of Fendalton, ChristchurchSt Barnabas & St Thomas
A Note from the Vicar Insurance Status: As was signalled last year, from the 31st December last year ANSVAR has ceased to provide insurance cover for the churches of the Diocese. However last week I was informed that the Anglican Insurance Board has secured new insurance cover from the 1st January this year through the insurance broker Marsh. This cover includes earthquake insurance as well as contract works insurance to cover buildings that are in the process of construction or repair. This provides some good news at a time where there is still considerable uncertainty regarding our own parishes liability for the rebuilding and strengthening of St Barnabas. A fuller report will be provided at the AGM in March. Pastorates: After the February earthquake our Pastoral Care ministry was stretched and it became clear that a new approach was necessary. After developing a rather complex plan I have settled on a simpler model that involves having designated Pastoral Visitors for each or our seven congregations. Each congregation would be a ‘Pastorate’ – a distinct sub-community looking after its own pastoral care needs. Visitors would be assigned a certain number of families to visit from time to time. Kofe and I will be calling a meeting of visitors sometime soon but if you would like to be a visitor please let me know. Stewardship: Last week I met with Maurice Walker and Ruth Harwood to continue planning for a Stewardship programme to be implemented in the parish in the first half of this year. Stewardship isn’t just about money – it’s about bringing all of our lives under God’s loving rule and asking him how we might respond. This of course includes all of our resources – our time, our gifts and abilities and our finances. And stewardship is a spiritual discipline that grows out of our gratitude to God for all he has done. There’s a strong link between recognising God’s grace in our lives and being moved to respond – to work and sacrifice and contribute to God’s kingdom. Thanks to all those who contribute in any way toward our parish family – in any family there is a need to take stock from time to time and this year will be stock taking year for us! Arohanui, Mark
